Q: I have an English degree and four years’ proofreading and editing experience. I am interested in doing copy editing/proofreading work from a home office and am curious if publishers ever hire remote employees.

A: I know that publishers can be remote, but you'd like to be a remote employee. That seems fair.
Given the quick turnaround time on the work that happnes at daily newspapers, few will take on someone new in a long-distance capacity. You'll have better luck looking for this kind of work with books, magazines and monthly in-house publications.
You can find leads for some of that work with various on-line sites (I'll decline to name/recommend any), but you'll see that the lowball bidding may make the work unattractive.
Best bet: Wear out some shoe leather to drum up clients who will have continuing needs for editing and proofing and then do your work at home.
Does anyone know of publishing companies that are doing this? I am an 18-year news veteran and need to do some work from home because of a disbility. Can anyone help?
